POST 4: The micronutrients

The micronutrients, what their function? What the influence they have on a diet? How are they subdivided and what foods contain them?

This topic is very interesting on account of the great benefits that this type of nutrients even though the portions to be consumed are small. Also because of the little knowledge that the general population has regarding this.

To start talking about micronutrients we must have prior knowledge:

• Nutrition consists of obtaining the nutrients that are in food

• Nutrients are chemical compounds contained in food that provide cells with everything they need to live; these are subdivided into two large groups:

Macronutrients are those substances that provide energy, help repair and build organic structures, among other functions (These include proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids) and the micronutrients that are our main topic.

Micronutrients, generally derived from food consumption, are substances that do not provide energy, but are essential for the proper functioning of our body. These are subdivided into vitamins, minerals, and dietary fibers.

·         The vitamin better known by all of us is the colored pill that benefits the immune system, vitamin C.

·         The calcium found in dairy products, associated with the strength of the bones and the             potassium in bananas to prevent cramps are two examples of minerals.

·         The dietary fibers that add volume to the diet, causing a feeling of satiety. Also, to keep the intestine clean, these promote intestinal transit and can be found in nuts and seeds.

In conclusion, we can say that the micronutrients consumed in adequate portions are essential for the growth and development of our organism.
